A great Rabbi asked, why is it when we speak of the ideal world of peace on the earth, we refer to the prophesy of Isaiah that “the wolf will dwell with the lamb, and the leopard will lie down with the kid, etc.”. (Isaiah 11:6) We have another example of peaceful living found in this week’s portion. In Noah’s Ark all the animals lived peacefully together. Why don’t we bring this as an example of how the world could really be ideally?
His answer to this question was that in Noah’s Ark the animals lived peacefully together not out of principle. They managed to treat each other civilly out of fear of what would happen if they were cast out of the Ark. The raging flood was the incentive for them all to live in tranquility.
The prophesy of Isaiah is speaking of a time when man will know that he is to live with his fellow man in peace, not because of fear but because that is the ideal. Then man and the animals and the entire universe will be in peaceful concert and the Messianic era will have been reached. We have a long way to go to achieve this goal, but we have been promised by Hashem that this will be some day in the ACHRIT HAYAMIN, in the end of days.
